What it costs Luxembourg

How much does a dental implant cost in Portugal, and how much of it do you pay yourself?

In short

At the Instituto AreLuna, in Portugal, a single implant starts from 600 €. That is a starting amount, not an invoice: what you will pay depends on a prior individual assessment and diagnosis, carried out at a consultation with a 3D X-ray. The published reference in Luxembourg for the same procedure is from 1 600 €. And for anyone insured with the CNS — the Caisse nationale de santé, Luxembourg’s national health insurance fund — one detail changes the whole calculation: the fund does not contribute to the implant; it contributes to the prosthesis.

§ 01

Two figures, and a dividing line

You probably already have a Luxembourg quote somewhere in a drawer. The published reference in Luxembourg for an implant is from 1 600 €. In Portugal, at the Instituto AreLuna, the same procedure starts from 600 €. On both sides of the border, the real amount depends on a prior individual assessment and diagnosis.

On one tooth, the gap is noticeable. On three, it changes a family decision. But for someone who pays into the CNS, the comparison does not stop at the total: an implant invoice is not a single block.

It reads as two lines. On one side, the surgery and the titanium part: the fund does not cover them. On the other, the fixed prosthesis — crown, bridge, including one placed on an implant — reimbursed at 80% of the official tariffs, and at 100%, without the 20% personal contribution, for anyone who had their annual preventive dental check-up in each of the two previous calendar years. The reimbursement is calculated on that second line, and on that line alone. Which prosthetic procedure is chosen depends on a prior individual assessment and diagnosis.

§ 02

‘From’ is not a figure of speech

A single implant is a titanium screw placed in the jawbone with a crown on top. The work it needs changes with the bone that remains, with the time since the tooth was lost, and with whatever needs sorting out around it.

Three things move the amount, and none of them can be known without an image: the bone available where the tooth is missing, what has to be treated around it — a root to remove, an inflammation, a neighbouring tooth to look at again — and the number of teeth to replace.

The fixed quote comes out of the diagnostic consultation, once the 3D X-ray has been taken. The CBCT scan produces a three-dimensional image showing the real height and thickness of the bone at every point. Before that examination, a final amount is only a well-presented guess; afterwards, it is a written document, which also depends on a prior individual assessment and diagnosis.

§ 03

What is described behind that amount

The Instituto AreLuna describes the single implant as the replacement of a lost tooth with a titanium implant and a zirconia crown, placed by guided surgery planned from a 3D X-ray. The stated course is two to three appointments, plus three months of osseointegration — the time the bone takes to bond with the titanium, which happens while you are at home. These durations are indicative and depend on a prior individual assessment and diagnosis.

The implant placed is a Neodent, a brand of the Swiss Straumann group, one of the largest implant manufacturers in the world. The case is planned on a computer before the surgery — that is what guided surgery means.

What is included in the starting amount and what is left out is for the written quote to say, line by line. For a Luxembourg claim, that document has a second life: the Instituto AreLuna prepares it in French, with the nomenclature codes, ready to be submitted.

§ 04

Put the two quotes side by side, not the two price lists

Comparing two price lists achieves nothing: they are two adverts. Comparing two quotes achieves something, and four lines are enough — the implant brand, what is included, the number of implants, and what is written about replacement if an implant does not integrate.

Then add what no price list contains: the journeys, the days off work, the accommodation. That is the sum to set against the Luxembourg quote.

The diagnostic consultation is booked by telephone, on +351 220 430 090. Dental care is provided at the establishment at Rua de Júlio Dinis, 194, 4050-327 Porto. On the fund’s side, what needs to be submitted for the prosthetic part, and when, should be confirmed with the CNS before treatment begins: this page does not describe that procedure.

§ 05

Frequently asked questions

Can this amount still change?

As long as there has been no examination, yes. 600 € is the Instituto AreLuna’s starting point for a single implant; the written amount comes out of the diagnostic consultation with a 3D X-ray and depends on a prior individual assessment and diagnosis. A clinic that fixes a figure before the image is fixing a figure it has no way of knowing.

Does the CNS reimburse part of this amount?

Not the implant. The fund contributes to the fixed prosthesis, including one placed on an implant, at 80% of the official tariffs — and at 100%, without the 20% personal contribution, if the annual preventive dental check-up was done in each of the two previous calendar years. Which prosthetic procedure is chosen depends on a prior individual assessment and diagnosis, and confirmation comes from the fund.

And where does the crown fit in?

The Instituto AreLuna describes the treatment as a titanium implant with a zirconia crown. Even so, it is the line to have confirmed in writing: for someone insured in Luxembourg, it is also the line the fund will look at.
